Changemakers ‘Considering Residencies’ discussion and co-design workshop
The Biyal-a Armstrong Creek Library has amazing creative workshop facilities in a sound studio, laser-cutting and 3D printing, along with extensive textiles facilities and a group workspace all within an architecturally-designed building. The library is looking to develop an artist-in-residence program to activate this space and explore the library’s place in the community. As a public space, how can creatives provide different ways to engage with the space and consider different approaches to traditional perceptions of a library?
This Changemakers is an exciting opportunity to explore these ideas and contribute to the design of the planned residency.
We’ll explore the diverse offerings in the residency world and the benefits they present. The conversation will be led by outgoing Executive Director of Res Artis, Eliza Dawson who has led this important worldwide network of 700 arts residencies across 80 countries for the past 8 years and the management of Asialink’s Arts Residency Program. Alongside Eliza, we’ll hear from Amaara Raheem, Sri Lankan Australian dance-artist based between Naarm/Melbourne and Gariwerd/Grampians. Amaara’s practice of choreography and performance is deeply informed by multiple belongings. Amaara will share her creative research on experimental documentation and ‘residency practices’.
When: Saturday 3 May from 11am to 2pm.

Giving Day to the Arts micro grants
Apply for a micro-grant for the creation of digital content to support your Giving Day to the Arts campaign.
Creative Australia is introducing a new national Giving Day to the Arts, taking place on Thursday 23 October 2025.
This program is designed to support and enable a collective action by artists and arts organisations to fundraise on one national day – increasing the visibility of arts philanthropy and encouraging greater generosity in support of the arts.
Through creating a nation-wide groundswell, the introduction of the Giving Day to the Arts aims to elevate the public value of the arts in the consciousness of everyday Australians and increase donor engagement in support of Australian creativity.
The initiative will provide micro-grants to artists and small to medium art organisations (of less than $5 million operating budget) to support the creation of digital content for fundraising campaigns across a 12-hour public campaign.
In addition to the micro-grants, the program also offers a series of free online fundraising workshops and coaching sessions, accessible to artists and arts organisations of any size, to support the engagement and capability of artists and arts organisations to attract private investment. These workshops are specifically designed to develop knowledge and confidence and maximise fundraising success in delivery of a giving day.
The program is presented as an open-access model and invites non-beneficiaries of the micro-grants to participate in the collective groundswell of fundraising on one national day, including the use of the Creative Australia digital assets that allow individual campaigns to be branded as part of the national collective campaign.
Participants will also have access to a supplier list of localised content creators. The supplier list will assist artists and arts organisations to engage with relevant expertise beyond their existing networks. Engaging with relevant local content creators will support participants to amplify their fundraising efforts and enhance community engagement in the arts sector.

Upcoming Federal election – how to advocate for the arts
Our friends at TNA (Theatre Network Australia) have created a series of email templates to help you advocate for stronger investment in the arts, whether you’re an independent artist, an arts worker, or part of an organisation.
These templates are customisable and designed for different types of MPs and Senators, ensuring your message is relevant and impactful. At their website, you’ll find a list of email variations with guidance on which one to use based on who you’re writing to and what you want to focus on.
The TNA website is here.
If you have engaged with Making Change, let your local member know how this has impacted on the sustainability of your practice and/or arts community. Regional Arts Victoria depends on funding from all levels of government – including Federal funds – and RAV recently submitted a response to the State Inquiry into Cultural and Creative Industries in Victoria in which RAV noted a significant shortfall in regional funding.
Some other notes from RAV’s submission that may help you engage with your local MP:
The benefits of multi-year funding in regional communities would extend beyond ad hoc projects and into
shaping creative systems and community development trajectories that:
- Develop comprehensive artistic programs for and with people of all ages, abilities, life-stages and
cultures. - Foster partnerships between local government infrastructure such as performing arts centres or
museums, and regional creatives - Build artistic expertise within regional contexts, enabling the retention of creative practitioners,
thereby fostering the development of distinctive regional stories and practice styles and
attractions and retaining the talented people required to staff hospitals, schools and business in
regional Victoria. - Establish robust administrative frameworks and good governance that support sophisticated
artistic exploration alongside community engagement initiatives, beyond ad hoc cultural
interventions. - Cultivate intergenerational artistic literacy and cultural engagement patterns, facilitating the
emergence of informed and discerning audiences and philanthropic giving. - Activate regional cultural infrastructure that serves as a focus for pride of place and social
connectedness. - Boost auxiliary creative industries and support services that enhance regional economic
resilience through tourism, employment and educational opportunities.
